Languages, XMB 1.9.11, and You

I'm writing today to tell everyone about an important change that will be coming in the next version of XMB. This is a very early notice because I don't like to hide surprises in the release notes!

Starting in version 1.9.11, XMB will have a new translation system. :)

One of the big changes you need to know about is that there will be a new storage location. XMB will use the MySQL database instead of PHP files to store translation information. XMB will not detect new files if you put them in the /lang/ folder!

But everything is okay! :) We are keeping the same file format so that you can import and export .lang.php files very easily.

Translations will be installed by going to your board's Administration Panel and using a new "Translations" area to select and upload files.

Here are some details:
  • XMB will be able to send email notifications in each recipient's language instead of always using the sender's language!
  • PHP will stay as the primary translation format, but the syntax will be more strict.
  • We are updating all 23 translations of XMB. :tumble: They will be stable and released with this version even if some are incomplete.
  • All Administrators will be able to install and edit translations through the Administration Panel.
  • Super Administrators will be able to use .sql files as a secondary translation format.
  • Manual editing of $lang keys wont be a requirement for new hacks that use the translation API.
