When they hit the register button the page goes white with this

The system has failed to process your request. If you're an administrator, please set the DEBUG flag to true in config.php

Not exactly sure what I need to do

That is fixed.
Next time please let us know what the last modification was to the member.php before the error occurred. As that is usually why it happens. Wrong hack installation.
