XMB my beloved. There's just something about it I like that I can't quite describe, even if it is unlikely to "make a serious return"... it's probably the mix of reasonably sane coding practices for the time and the overall look and feel, and the small vibes it has compared to the likes of a more daunting project eg myBB or SMF making it a bit easier to approach and contribute to. The look and feel, while "dated", is something of a characteristic of forums in themselves and IMO is part and parcel of their ways - while they can be "modernised" in the sense of perhaps making sure they work more efficiently on a mobile device, or adding quality of life features... I don't think it's particularly feasible to detract and alienate the core audience who still uses messageboards in pursuit of those "social media" minded people who will never actually engage with them. This is not gatekeeping, this is more a case of keeping things distinct from one another, and it depresses me when forums try to make themselves into some sort of "alternative to Reddit/Facebook groups/4chan/Discord", when the answer is not to imitate but to find space in a changing world.
